How to look professional on video conference calls: Lighting

A big issue we see on video conference calls is achieving proper lighting. While buying a nice, big light would be great for looking professional on a video conferencing call, we have a few simple DIY tips and tricks to looking good in front of the camera.

Be aware of where your main light source — such as a window — is located. You never want to have it directly behind you. Most computer cameras work with simple auto settings and will adjust the exposure based off this light. If there is a window behind you, it will set the exposure on your face to be really dark. Instead of having the light behind you, flip around so that the window or light is in front of you. If the light is too bright, try to diffuse the light with a sheer curtain. This will cause the light to disperse more and soften the shadows on your face.

If window lighting is not an option, simply put a lamp behind your computer. Or there are a many options, such as ring lights, that you can add to the top of your computer.
